NE of the best things about being Managing Editor of Strength and Health is that you get to meet such nice people. Each new day is an adventure, for we never know who will next come through our door, nor from what far-flung country they may have traveled. These visitors represent every strata of life and every possible profession or calling. We meet ballplayers, wrestlers, boxers, track and field. athletes, coaches, physical education men, professors, musicians, actors, entertainers, preachers, bartenders and hitch-hikers. All of these people have one thing in common . . . they have all been bitten by the virulent

barbell bug.... and regardless of their other interests or professions, they will drop everything to spend a few minutes or an hour or several days just shooting the breeze with fellow addicts.

Several months back a tall, wellbuilt stranger walked in, carrying a bag, and announced that he wanted to train a few days in the York gym with our gang. He told us he had just flown in from Europe and was going to pick up a new plane here in the USA to fly back to Australia. His name was Rube Hawe, and he operated The Royal Hotel in Yass, New South Wales, Australia.

He spent several days with us, working out like a beaver in the big gym, and seemed to enjoy listening to the sparkling repartee carelessly bandied back and forth by our leading conversationalists, such as Jules Bacon, Steve Stanko, Jake Hitchens and George Shandor, and the mighty battles that were waged daily between Ike "Betcha" Berger

and Mighty Mouse Vinci. When he left, he carried with him a full assortment of York items, including a number of T shirts featuring York and Bosco. We enjoyed his stay, and wondered if we would ever hear from him again.

A few days ago we received this letter, which we share with you because he seems to have developed a power training device that has several unique features. He also sent the pictures which appear on this page. Here is his letter...

DEAR HARRY: Here I am back in Australia and hard at work. It was a great experience to spend those few days with you chaps in York on my way home from Europe.. I stopped off at Hawaii one day and trained with Tommy Kono and found him a great guy. I enclose a couple of pictures of my power training machine. The guides on the bar trip the cams on the way up, when the guides pass, the cams immediately fall back in place, and stop the bar from falling past them if it is dropped. I tested the machine with 18" drops with 350 lbs. The weight is lowered to the floor by first resting it on the cams, then hooking springs attached to cord onto the fin projecting from inside of frame. The bar is then lifted off cams and spring pulls cams clear and bar can be lowered to floor, unhooking the spring allows the cams to drop back in place and the machine is ready for another lift. There is a rubber buffer on the brackets welded on lower part of frame to absorb shock. Holes in frame are to practice jerks and heavy supporting. Machine may also be used for squats and bench presses. It is well-oiled and does not impair your lifting in any way, and suits both split and squat-style lifters.
